PROJECT ENGINEER 1

Position Summary:

The Project Engineer 1 position at PMIC is responsible for providing quality test results for a variety of customer materials. This highly technical position involves physical materials testing, test system design and troubleshooting, data analysis, and reporting. In this role, you will regularly work with the sales team to review and edit quotes for testing services to ensure technical accuracy and feasibility. As a Project Engineer 1 working in our laboratory, you will play a vital role in supporting material testing projects for cutting-edge Research and Development projects. Working alongside experienced engineers, you will assist in conducting tests, collecting, and analyzing data, and contributing to project completion efforts. This position provides an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field of material testing while working in a collaborative and supportive environment.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
Material Testing and Analysis:
      • Perform material properties testing to produce measurements.
      • Conduct (Assist senior engineers in conducting) material testing according to industry-standard procedures for measurements of thermal conductivity, thermal expansion, moisture expansion, and other standard or custom thermophysical testing services.
      • Learn and apply testing techniques to evaluate material performance while closely following established protocols.
      • Assist with other tasks in support of the completion of customer contracts, including specimen preparation, physical testing, data analysis, and report generation.
Sales and Customer Support:
      • Work directly with the sales team and with customers to determine the best solutions for our customers’ testing needs.
      • Review and edit quotes for testing and services, provide feedback to the sales team, and offer alternative solutions to better fit PMIC’s capabilities, customers’ budgetary constraints, and/or technical requirements when applicable.
Equipment Operation and Maintenance:
      • Learn to operate and maintain testing equipment, following established protocols and safety guidelines.
      • Collaborate with other laboratory staff to ensure the proper functioning of equipment and troubleshoot any issues that may arise.
      • Maintain test systems, ensuring equipment is properly calibrated and measurements are accurate and repeatable.
Project Management (Coordination):
      • Collaborate with project teams to support the execution of various material testing projects.
      • Take ownership of (Assist in managing) project timelines, budgets, resources allocations, and documentation to ensure accurate and timely delivery of results.
Documentation and Reporting:
      • Prepare (Assist in preparing) clear and concise technical reports per the requirements of the ASTM, ISO, or other industry standard testing procedures.
      • Offer objective observations on test results, anomalies, and offer recommendations for follow up testing or services.
Quality Assurance:
      • Maintain strict adherence to industry standards, regulatory requirements, and PMIC’s policies and procedures.
      • Ensure compliance with internal quality control procedures, guaranteeing the accuracy and integrity of all data, testing procedures and data analysis.
Other Duties:
      • As assigned by your supervisor(s).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
      • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or another relevant field.
      • Basic understanding of material properties, testing methodologies, and data analysis techniques.
      • 1 to 3 years’ experience working in a testing lab or equivalent environment preferred.
      • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail to ensure accurate data collection and documentation.
      • Excellent problem-solving and data analysis skills.
      • Comfortable reading datasheets and integrating new components into mechanical and electrical systems.
      • Demonstrated competency using basic shop tools.
      • Proficient computer skills and general IT knowledge.
      • Experience using Excel for data manipulation.
      • Experience creating mechanical drawings using SolidWorks or other CAD software.
      • Strong technical writing skills.
      • Strong project management skills, including the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
      • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, while also demonstrating initiative and self-motivation.
      • Effective, professional communication skills, both verbal and written, to collaborate with team members and report findings.
      • Familiarity with testing equipment, calibrations, National Instruments software, and/or SolidWorks simulations is a plus.
Physical Requirements:
      • Ability to frequently operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
      • Ability to converse with PMIC staff and vendors in a professional manner.
      • Ability to regularly lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
      • Ability to move over uneven terrain and position self in confined spaces.
      • Ability to ascend/descend and work atop ladders.
      • Good manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for precise handling of testing equipment and samples.
      • Ability to inspect, prepare and place test equipment in alignment with complex test setups.
      • Hearing ability to communicate effectively in a laboratory environment and detect audible alerts or warnings.

NOTE: This position requires participation in International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) controlled activities, and requires compliance with ITAR regulations. Candidates must be eligible to participate in these and other export-controlled activities, and must be willing to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) to protect sensitive information. Refer to ITAR regulations (22 CFR Parts 120-130) for further guidance on eligibility requirements.
